Health and Safety Services and Advice

Why a company may need a consultant

The HSE guidelines for an effective Health & Safety Management System includes:
  • Health and Safety Policy
  • Accident prevention processes
  • Prevention against ill health
  • Practices, procedures and resources for developing and implementing, reviewing and maintaining the occupational safety and health policy

Employers have a legal responsibility to “appoint one or more competent persons” to help with health and safety. Whether they decide to have someone inside or outside the organisation, or a combination of both, it’s vital that they’re competent to do the job. Having an in-house professional to manage health and safety – someone who’s familiar with the organisation’s operations – is typically the ideal solution. But in smaller organisations this isn’t always possible. And in all organisations, whatever their size, there are times when getting outside help is the right thing to do. A competent consultant can bring fresh thinking on good practice or new solutions to an organisation. A business may need specific help on say, making sure safety is ‘designed in’ to new processes, or delivering a new health and safety campaign or training programme. And, of course, qualified and experienced consultants can offer specialist support in areas outside the competence of in-house professionals, for example radiation protection or investigating serious incidents. Employers can’t avoid their health and safety responsibilities, but they can choose to have a high-risk task carried out by a competent consultant rather than an in-house health and safety manager. This transfers some of the risk away from their organisation. Being a consultant, therefore, carries great responsibility.
To ensure you’re following the law, your business requires a Health & Safety Management System. This management system is a collection of policies and documentation put in place to govern your working practices. Failure to manage health and safety at work could result in a safety breach or worse still an accident involving an employee.

Auditing and Reporting

BRIGHT TRAINING AND ASSESSEMNT Health and Safety Consultants have developed a number of different types of Health and Safety Audit to help their clients ensure that they are meeting their legal obligations.  Our audits can benchmark against a specific standard such as HS(G)65 or ISO45001:2018 (Previously OHSAS18001:2007), or we can audit against a specific piece of Health and Safety legislation, that will appraise the compliance of an organization to specific Health and Safety Law.

Types of Health and Safety Audit We Offer

Health and Safety Audit

An overview of your company’s Health and Safety Management and legal compliance.  This type of audit will cover all the important aspects of the Health and Safety legislation relevant to your business or workplace and will provide you with a prioritised Health and Safety Action Plan, that can be the focus of the improvement in your Health and Safety Management System.  This Audit is generally carried out annually.

HS(G)65 Audit

This Health and Safety audit looks at how your Health and Safety system is managed and, along with looking at legal compliances, provides and in-depth view of your Health and Safety Management.  The audit report provides an action plan on which to develop your Health and Safety Management system.

ISO45001 Audit – Gap Analysis and 1st and 2nd Stage Audits

Compliance Audit

Where you have a full Health and Safety management system in place, you may wish to audit specific aspects of your compliance.  Our consultants can carry out a full compliance on a specific piece of legislation such as the Work at Height Regulations 2005, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, and so on.  This type of audit is particularly useful in large organisations to allow Health and Safety Managers, Directors and the Senior Leadership to understand how well particular arrangements have been implemented in their organisations.

Bespoke Audits

In consultation with the client we are also happy to develop specific bespoke audits to meet the needs of their particular organisation.

Our team of health and safety consultants can either perform an advisory or policing role (dependant on client need), offer help and support to the contractor, as well as liaising with designers/consultants/enforcement officers as necessary.

Construction site safety inspections enable a client to demonstrate that they are meeting their legal duty in respect of ensuring there are effective management arrangements in place for a construction project including welfare facilities.
